Hair thinning and hair loss is one thing that every man takes seriously. Surveys have shown that about 60% of men around the age of 50 will develop some type of hair loss and the older you getthe higher the risk of having it.

Though hair thinning and hair loss also occurs in women, the great majority of hair loss cases occur on men.Unfortunately, this unwanted condition may cause uncertainty and confidence issues. Some don’t even go out of their homes due to their thinning hair.

What causes hair loss in men?

The truth is, there are many of causes of hair loss in men like stress, over dieting, hair pulling mannerism or even certain hair styles like dreadlocks or cornrows. However theleading cause of hair loss is androgenetic alopecia or typically referred to as “male pattern hair loss”. It is a pattern because almost all men experience the same stages of balding. First of all, hair loss starts with an exceeding hair line, some start with a thinning crown, while others experience a thinning crown and an exceeding hair line at the same time. In the long run, the older we get the more hair loss occurs until only a rim of hair is left a long the temples to the back of the head. In worse cases, total hair loss can occur.

Androgenetic alopecia is a genetic type of hair loss, this means it runs in families. So this alone may offer you a clue whether you’ll suffer from hair loss in the future or not. Now the hair loss gene causes the hair follicles in the scalp to become sensitive to dihydrotestosterone or DHT. This is a hormone regularly created in the body. In short, DHT comes from testosterone when acted upon by 5-apha reductase. Both hormones are androgens but DHT if far more potent than testosterone, making it an importantmale hormone.

How do we cure androgenetic alopecia?

Sadly, there are no cures of this condition. Only treatments are available and their effects are not permanent, making a patient use a particular hair loss treatment for life if he wants to keep a head full of hair. Basically, hair loss treatments works by inhibiting DHT, since this hormone is an important hormone, it is best to stop its harmful effects locally at the scalp, this way no side effects can occur.
