Hair loss is a very common problem for everybody, whether you’re a man or a woman, young or old. This unfavorable condition is inevitable for some, particularly for those with a family history of hair fall. In most cases, this condition starts at around 30 years of age but there are increasing numbers of early hair loss occurrences, some even in their teens. Though this condition does not cause any kind of illness, it sure can affect a child’s psyche – forever.

Androgenetic alopecia is the common cause of hair loss. This is a genetic kind of hair loss that is handed down from generation to generation. Androgenetic alopecia occurs because the hair follicles, particularly follicles on the head, become sensitive to a hormone that the body naturally produces. This hormone is called dihydrotestosterone or DHT. In men, DHT is very important since it triggers the secondary male traits like deepening of the voice, more masculine body figure, and it even stimulates hair growth – body hair that is.

DHT is like fertilizer for body hair. Women who suffer from hirsutism have increased amounts of DHT in their blood. Sadly, DHT isn’t very kind to hair on our scalp or maybe our scalp hair doesn’t fancy DHT. It’s crazy yes, so crazy that even with the advancements of research and medicine, scientists still have no clue as to why hair loss occurs, that’s why they can’t develop a cure for it.

Hair loss has no cure however it is treatable by delaying the advancement of baldness or better yet, reverse the effects of increasing hair fall and instead stimulate new hair growth. There are several hair loss treatments available in the market and these have different approaches to stimulate hair growth.

Minoxidil is a drug that’s topically rubbed into scalp to encourage hair growth by increasing the blood flow to the scalp. Finasteride is an oral medication that helps reduce the amount of circulating DHT. Finasteride works by inhibit an enzyme called 5 alpha reductase, this stops the conversion of testosterone to DHT. No DHT or very low levels of DHT means healthier scalp growth.

A growing trend today is using natural hair loss products since the medications above are made of chemicals that can cause various side effects. Natural treatments use an herb extract from the saw palmetto palm tree and is used as an effective DHT inhibitor. Also, natural treatments contain all the nutrients the hair needs to stop further hair fall and encourage healthy hair growth.
