Top 5 Reasons Why You Are Losing Hair
It can be very devastating when you realise that you are really losing hair. There are many reasons behind hair loss. Similarly, there are also different ways to manage each cause. Here are 7 common reasons why you are losing hair.
- Hereditary Hair Loss. This is the most common reason for losing hair. In men, this often follows a horseshoe pattern. Hair loss starts at the crown then continues to recede in the next years. In womens hair loss, it follows a generalised hair thinning all over the head.
- Telogen Effluvium. This occurs when some stress causes the hair roots to shift from the normal growing phase into the resting phase. Then it moves on quickly into the telogen phase or the shedding phase of the hair growth cycle. Extreme stress, drastic weight loss, major surgery, or childbirth lead to telogen effluvium and can be the reason why you are losing hair.
- Skin conditions of the scalp. These include seborrheic dermatitis, psoriasis, and tinea capitis. Seborrheic dermatitis appears as scaling rash on the scalp. Psoriasis looks like thick crusted silvery plaques that can cover the scalp. Tinea capitis or ringworm of the scalp appears like small black dots or round spots on the skin. These scalp conditions are possible reasons why you are losing hair.
- Excessive styling. Regular use of blow dryers, straightening irons, and vigorous brushing can lead to some degree of hair loss. Brushing the hair while it is wet can cause damage to the strands, leading to easy breakage. Instead, use a wide toothed comb. Constant styling with tight elastics, clips, braids, cornrows, and tight ponytails can also make you lose hair because of traction alopecia.
- Iron deficiency anemia. This is quite common especially in women, vegetarians, vegans, and people with peptic ulcer disease. Iron plays a crucial role in providing oxygen to the cells in the body as well as in blood circulation.
Knowing why you are losing hair will help you in properly dealing with it.
