THE ROLE OF 5 ALPHA REDUCTASE IN HAIR LOSS
Posted by Manny Y on 8th Apr 2015
5 alpha reductase or 5AR is an enzyme which isinvolved with steroid metabolism. It converts the hormone testosterone to dihydrotestosterone or DHT.
DHT, on the other hand, is an active form of testosterone, that’sconsidered to beresponsible for scalp hair loss or male pattern hair loss. Pattern hair loss is connected toincreased levels of 5 alpha reductase in the hair follicles. With elevated levels of 5AR, the natural hair cycle is disrupted. This also causes miniaturization of hair follicles, producing finer and thinning hair strands. Over the years, the hair follicles may enter a permanent dormant state and stop producing hair, thus the hair loss.
To stop hair loss, 5 alpha reductase inhibitors such as saw palmetto can be used. Saw palmetto is an herbal DHT blocker that works by blocking the enzyme 5 alpha reductase. This neutralising DHT on the surface of the scalp.
A good hair loss treatment inhibits the production of 5 alpha reductase to stop DHT, the main cause of hair loss.
