Dandruff is considered the most common reason for scalp itching. Amazingly, less than half or 40% of the human population has dandruff. Most of us don’t even know we have it. That’s a lot of people, symptomatic or non-symptomatic.
Why is dandruff so common? Malassezia furfur is a fungus that is normally found on the skin. Sadly, this fungus is the cause of dandruff. In certain conditions, like for example when a patient has oily hair or got incredibly ill causing the patient’s immune system to weaken, this opportunistic organism takes advantage of this, and can proliferate and grow three times its normal number. This is burst of growth can irritate the skin, causing increased skin shedding, hence the flakes. This is the reason why dandruff is so common since the culprit normally resides on our skin.
One more reason why dandruff is so common is it is very contagious. Borrowing a comb or brush for form a person with dandruff will most likely infect a person with healthy scalp. Since the flakes are also filled with M. furfur, this fungus can easily implant themselves on the scalp especially if the person don’t regularly take a bath or wash their hair that often.
Though dandruff isn’t a serious condition, it may cause damage to the scalp due to constant scratching. The itching and scratching can mechanically pull out hair and can cause micro abrasions on the scalp that can get infected. A wound that gets infected will most likely heal with a scar. This is a thing that you don’t want to happen to your scalp because this can cause permanent hair loss.
Don’t let dandruff ruin your scalp and hair. This is easily treatable and absolutely preventable with regular use of anti dandruff shampoos. Also proper hygiene is important and regular head washing is enough to prevent this unwanted condtion.
