Seven Commonly Asked Questions About Hair Thinning
What causes hair thinning?
Hair thinning can be due to a lot of causes. It can be as a result of hormonal problems, physical and emotional stress, somedrugs, scalp issues, iron deficiency, aging, and genetics. The most frequent cause of hair thinning is due to male pattern baldness. This takes place when testosterone is converted to DHT by the enzyme 5 alpha reductase. This results in minitiaruziation of the hair follicles and progressive thinning of the hair.Generally the hair follicle stops producing hair completely, leading to baldness.
Does stress influence hair thinning?
Both emotional and physical stress can result innon permanent hair thinning. This type of hair thinning is called telogen effluvium wherein the hair is forced to enter the resting phase. The hairs then fall out a couple of months later. However, in about six to nine months, hair usually grows back to normal thickness.
Is it true that when a man grows his hair long it may cause baldness at a later point?
This is simply not true. Growing the hair long or short in your younger years will not have an effect on the degree of hair thinning later in life.
When I wash or brush my hair, I notice that I lose around 50 hairs. What causes this?
Hair normally undergoes three phases which are the growth phase, transitional phase, and the resting phase. Signals are sent out by the body regarding the hair cycle. Once the cycle is complete, the hair strand is shed to make way for new growth of hair on the follicle. It is common to lose 50 to 100 strands per day because of this shedding and this accounts for the hair you see when you shower or comb.
Willcombing the hair 100 times per day grow hair?
While brushing the hair helps distribute oil from the scalp to the ends of the hair, going overboard can do more harm than good. Brushing the hair 100 times can damage the outer layer of the hair strand or can harm the follicles.
Could washing hair under cold water cure baldness?
Washing cold water over the head can improve circulation but will not cure balding or hair thinning.
Is it normal to lose some hair from the early 30s?
Indeed, it is natural to lose hair as you get older. Hair gets finer with age and the hair follicles on the scalp will progressively reduce.
