Who would know that a substance naturally present in barley, rye and wheat could make an excellent hair loss treatment. When extracted from these natural food sources, Azelaic acid is formed as a white powder. Remarkably, this compound is also naturally produced by yeast found naturally on the human skin.

Azelaic acid can be used as a natural hair loss treatment and for benign prostatic hyperplasia. This substance works by inhibiting the enzyme 5 alpha reductase. 5 alpha reductase is accountable for the conversion to testosterone to dihydrotestosterone or DHT.
DHT is well known to be the cause of androgenetic type of hair loss. This affects men and women alike. Frequently, hair loss is an age-related condition and for the majority of people, this is a natural process that is predetermined especially if a certain family has a history of hair loss.
DHT is always found in the human body and all the while it doesn’t affect any hair growth in the scalp, until such time it causes hair loss. When and why the hair follicles become sensitive to DHT is still unknown.
Azelaic acid are usually combined with zinc oxide and vitamin B6 to stop the enzymatic effects of 5 alpha reductase. Zinc oxide too have 5 alpha reductase inhibitory effects. Vitamin B6 is used to potentiate the effects of Azelaic Acid and Zinc oxide.
Usually, these are used topically and applied directly on the scalp. These compounds inhibit 5 alpha reductase on scalp, therefore, stopping the formation of DHT. In return, the hair follicles are not exposed to harmful effects of DHT and hair follicle weakening and shrinking does not occur, thus stop hair loss.
