Androgenetic alopecia is perhaps one of the most common type of hair loss in men and women of all ages. If you are suffering from hair loss, you are not the only one who got bald patches here and there.
As mentioned earlier androgenetic alopecia affects both sexes but the pattern of hair loss differs.
In male pattern hair loss, hair loss begins as a receding hair line that slowly goes higher and higher. Though the pattern presents differently from patient to patient, most get a bald top with a rim of hair still present at the temples going to the back. In worst cases patients can go totally bald.
In female pattern hair loss, there is only generalized hair thinning. Rarely do we find female patients who become totally bald. It is found that women who experience hair loss suffer more anxiety compared to men.
What may cause androgenetic alopecia?
This is a hereditary type of hair loss and can be acquired from both patents. The reason behind hair loss is due to the genetic sensitivity of the hair follicles to dihydrotestostorone or DHT. DHT is a hormone that is important for the development of the body, but in androgenetic alopecia, DHT is like poison to the scalp hair follicles. DHT slowlyreduce and weaken hair follicles to the point no more terminal hair is produced.
How can you treat this type of hair loss?
The easiest way to stop androgenetic alopecia is to stop its cause – DHT. Today, there are a lot of hair loss treatment companies focus on stopping this hormone. The most popular hair loss drug: finasteride inhibit the enzyme 5-apha reductase, this enzyme is responsible for the transformation of testosterone to DHT.
Another anti-DHT, saw palmetto is a natural alternative to finasteride. The extracts of saw palmetto are used as a topical solution or shampoo that directly inhibits DHT locally on the scalp.
