MANAGING POST PARTUM HAIR LOSS

Posted by Manny Y on 7th Apr 2015

Are you wondering why you’re nice thick stunning hair is suddenly falling out after giving birth? This sudden increase in hair fall is called post partum hair loss. This is quite a common condition, affecting half of all mothers. Luckily, this is temporary and is caused bya sudden change in hormonal levels.

How does post partum occur?

While pregnant, women typically have beautiful hair. This is because of a constant supply of hormones especially estrogen during pregnancy. Our hair follicles loves estrogen, this can be compared to fertilizer to plants. This hormone extends the telogen or resting phase. Normally, the telogen phase last for about 2 to 3 weeks before hair is shed off. During pregnancy, most hair will not shed off.

After birth, estrogen levels suddenly decreases. Without estrogen, hair growth goes back to its normal phase and as early as three weeks massive hair loss can occur. Typically, there is generalized hair thinning, in worst cases bald spots can occur.

As mentioned earlier, post partum hair loss is temporary and there’s no need to use a hair loss treatment. Prevention is difficult since you never know if you’ll develop this condition.

If you’re already experiencing post partum hair loss, there are ways to reduce hair fall:

  • Carefully comb or brush hair. This will prevent further hair fall.
  • Refrain from wearing hair styles that can pull hair like a bun or pony tail. These hair styles can cause tension and strain to hair that can pull out weakened strands from the roots.
  • Change to a shorter hair style. Short hair can make hair thinning less obvious. Not only that, longer hair strands are heavier compared to short hair, and it’s easier to brush or comb.
  • Maintaining a good diet rich in protein can also help reduce hair fall. Vitamins and minerals are also important to help metabolize food more efficiently. There are also B-complex vitamins that are good for hair.

Following the tips above can delay hair loss after giving birth, giving you ample time for your hair follicles to kick in and start growing again.
