Jennifer Aniston who is well recognized for her locks and single handed set the hair trend in the 90s is now suffering from hair loss. Fortunately, the “Friends” star isn’t suffering from the dreaded androgenetic alopecia or female pattern hair loss but hair loss due to prolong use of hair extension.
In an interview done by MSNBC, she described that the use of hair extensions have damage her own hair to a point it was no longer repairable. And the reason she cut her hair is, her real hair is thinning out due to the extensions, making hair look unnatural and fake.
Jennifer Aniston is not alone when it comes to hair loss due to hair extensions. Serena Williams, Colleen Rooney and Katie Price to mention a few have be seen with a patch of hair loss here and there due to hair extensions.
How do extensions cause hair loss?
Hair extensions are made from real or synthetic hair strands that are glued close to the base to your original hair. There are tworeasons why extensions can cause increased hair fall. First is the glue damages the protective layer of the hair making the hair strands brittle. Secondly, weight of the extensions can literally pull the hair strands from the roots causing patchy hair loss.
Sadly, permanent hair loss can occur due to the constant pulling of hair strands that can cause minute cuts to the scalp, these cuts can lead to an infection and if not treated a scar can form leading to permanent hair loss. So it is important to take care of your scalp while using hair extension and you should be aware if you have some minor cuts. If so, have your extensions removed immediately and apply antibiotic ointment on the affected area. To be safe, only use hair extension when needed and have it removed a few days after the event. But generally, if no infection has occurred hair eventually grow back and a hair loss treatment may not be need.
