A lot of women are not aware that some birth control pills can cause hair loss. Simply because of the hormonal changes in the body that are brought about by the consumption of these pills. Not all women will lose hair while on the pill. Those who are predisposed to hormone related hair loss and those who have increased sensitivity to hormonal changes in the body can experience hair loss.
Hair loss due to birth control pills can happen at varying degrees. Some women can experience hair loss soon after taking the pill while others may have hair loss when the birth control pills are stopped. Since the normal hair growth cycle is around three months long, thinning hair can manifest only when the new hair follicles are not enough to replace the hair falling out.
Women who have a history of thinning hair or hair loss in the family tend to be more prone to experience hair loss while taking oral contraceptives. Due to this, it is recommended that these women use only low androgen birth control pills. If hair loss still continues despite using low androgen pills, one can opt for a non hormonal method of birth control.
However, you will need to note that there are also other common causes of hair loss in women. This can include emotional stress, physical stress, diabetes, thyroid problems, too much intake of vitamin A supplement, beta blocker medications, illness, and antidepressants drugs. So it is important to consult a physician to know if there are other medical conditions, prescription drugs, or scalp conditions that may be causing the hair loss.
Along with determining and treating the underlying cause, using an herbal based hair loss treatment can help promote hair growth faster.
