Hair loss is a major problem when we reach a certain age, especially if baldness runs in the family. This is the reason why hair loss treatment companies are increasing in number and are creating all sorts of products. But genes are not the only reason for hair loss, would you believe that poor nutrition can also contribute to this unwanted condition?
Nutrition associated hair loss predominantly affects young children and teens because of consuming too much junk food. Kids just love to eat junk food, these food products have low nutritional value and are rich in fat. Our hair follicles primarily need food rich in protein because this is what hair is mostly made of.
Another common cause of hair loss especially on teenage girls is dieting. Dieting at a young age isn’t advisable because this is a stage of optimum growth and development. Depriving yourself of proper nutrition at a young age can lead to all sorts of health conditions including hair problems like dry and dull hair, poor hair growth and hair loss.
Proper nutrition is essential for a healthy body and of course healthy hair growth, below good sources of protein and other nutrients for your hair.
- Eggs or sometimes called liquid chicken by body builders is a good source of protein, that’s why dozens of eggs are consumed by these athletes. Also the eggs contain biotin or vitamin B7 which help strengthen each hair strands.
- Lean meats from beef and pork are packed with protein and zinc. Proteins are essential for hair growth and zinc is responsible for improving the appearance and prevents graying of hair. Deficiency of zinc and protein can slow down hair growth and can even make hair look dry and brittle, in worse cases hair loss can occur.
- Tuna and Salmon are also good sources of protein, as well as omega fatty acids, iron and Vitamin B12. Omega 3 is excellent for a healthy scalp and hair. Decrease intake of Omega 3 fatty acids can cause dry scalp and hair.
- Nuts and seeds are excellent sources of plant derived omega fatty acids. Flax seeds, almond and walnuts are excellent sources of this hair rejuvenating oil.
