Among the many ingredients said to help grow hair faster is methionine. Also called Met, this belongs to the group of amino acids.
Amino acids have a central role in building blocks of proteins and in metabolism. There are amino acids that we can produce in the body. Others must be obtained from the diet. Amino acids, including methionine, are called the building blocks of the body that make up proteins.
Proteins make up the various parts of the body. The hair is composed of keratin, a form of protein. Therefore, the amino acid methionine can help make hair grow faster because it is part of the complex substances used in the growth, repair, and maintenance of cells, including hair cells.
Methionine also supplies sulfur, which stops many problems in the skin, nails, and hair. Being one of the sulfur amino acids, methionine is known to maintain skin elasticity and strengthen the nails, and condition the hair. Also acting as an antioxidant, it protects the cells from the destructive free radicals that cause premature ageing. In hair, free radicals are said to be the cause of loss of hair colour and hair damage.
In addition to methionine, a properly balanced diet including a sufficient amount of protein will promote faster hair growth. As one of the building blocks of protein, this is actually the primary reason why methionine is said to contribute to healthy hair growth.
Methionine belongs to the essential amino acids, which means it cannot be produced by the body but must be obtained from food sources. found in a variety of foods such as eggs, beans, soybeans, fish, and meat.
If you wish to take amino acid therapy to help your hair grow faster, talk to your doctor before doing so. It is usually unsafe to take larger amounts than those typically found in food. Some studies have shown that too much methionine can cause brain damage, heart disease, and growth of some tumours.
