Garlic has been used for thousands of years not only as food but also for its medicinal properties. A brew of crushed garlic wasconsidered tocombat sickness and plague. During the first and second world war, garlic was offered to soldiers for preventinggangrene. It has been utilized for many conditions including respiratory problems, digestive problems, low energy, and parasites. It has been tried for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia, diabetes diarrhea, colds, and flu. It’s also employed in preventing tick bites and treatment of bacterial and fungal infections.

Nowadays, garlic remains to be used medicinally. It is taken as a supplement to help prevent heart disease, heart attack, control high blood pressure, lower cholesterol, and avoid plaque buildup in the arteries or atherosclerosis. A few of these uses have scientific support though itappears to be most useful in modestly educing blood pressure but other uses have yet to be proven by extensive studies.
Garlic oil is also being used as a hair loss treatment. The oil extracted is massaged onto the scalp and then covered with a hair cap. In the morning, this is washed off and is meant to stop hair loss and encourage hair growth.
The reason behind its use in baldness treatment may have stemmed from the fact that it contains sulfur, one of the minerals the body uses to promote healthy skin, nail, and hair growth. Garlic also contains allicin, said to have antifungal and antibacterial properties. This may help to prevent itchiness of the hair and scalp. Scalp itchiness and inflammation is one of the common causes of hair loss.
However, some health professionals warn that the high sulfur levels in garlic can cause dermatitis. Garlic dermatitis or allergic contact dermatitis to garlic is a common skin condition caused by contact with fresh garlic.
Applying garlic oil is not likely to have a great effect on hair growth. The most common cause of balding is heredity, a genetic sensitivity to dihydrotestosterone or DHT. When the male hormone testosterone acts with the enzyme 5AR, DHT is formed. The result is shrinking of the hair follicles and later on, this can progress to baldness.
To treat hair loss, tremendous advances in science and medicine has made it possible to neutralize DHT to stop further hair loss. Products are available in the market ranging from medicated scalp treatments to oral medications. However, as with all drug-based treatments, these can have adverse side effects. The good news is that natural and organic based treatments in the form of shampoo, conditioner, and extract are now available which are proven to be effective at stopping hair loss and promoting healthier hair growth without the harmful side effects.
