Among the top foods that can promote hair growth, protein is the most essential. This is because the hair is made up of keratin, a family of fibrous structural proteins. Foods that are rich in protein are meat, fish, poultry, dairy products, eggs, beans, and soy.
The second most significant nutrient for healthy hair growth is iron. Contrary to common belief, iron deficiency can also affect men, particularly those who are on a strict vegetarian diet. With low iron stores, slow hair loss can occur. Animal proteins, especially lean red meat, contain the most absorbable form of iron.
B vitamins are crucial for hair growth, made up of biotin, riboflavin, inositol, niacin, folic acid, and pantothenic acid. The B complex vitamins are essential in building new cells, including the hair. Foods rich in vitamin B include whole unprocessed foods, liver, and meat products.
Sulfur is another important nutrient to nourish the hair follicles by improving scalp circulation. Good sources of sulfur are eggs, meat, liver, fish, poultry, beans, and legumes. Plant sources include broccoli, cabbage, asparagus, and cauliflower.
Although the body cannot manufacture essential fatty acids, these are important to stimulate hair growth. Some food sources are fish, shellfish, soya oil, canola oil, leafy vegetables, and walnuts.
