FOLLICULITIS CAN CAUSE HAIR LOSS

FOLLICULITIS CAN CAUSE HAIR LOSS

Folliculitis is a fungal or bacterial infection of the hair follicles. It is one of the scalp conditions that can eventually lead to hair loss. Folliculitis can infect any part of the body where there are hairs.

The main cause for this was found to be Staphylococcus bacteria, although other bacteria and fungi may also be behind it. Staph is usually found on the skin and in majority of cases, the bacteria do not cause disease. But in people with weakened immune system, a small break in the skin can allow the bacteria to enter and overcome the natural defense mechanism of the body.

Folliculitis looks similar to small red pimples growing around the hair follicles. Superficial infections usually clear spontaneously in a few days but deep ones can be recurrent. There could be redness, swelling, and pustules that can lead to damage the hair follicles.

If the infection doesn’t subside, recur often, or spreads to other areas, see a dermatologist. Early diagnosis and treatment can prevent severe folliculitis and permanent hair loss.
