Posted by Manny Y on 6th Apr 2015

Another common cause of hair loss is seborrheic dermatitis of the scalp. This is an inflammatory condition where the scalp becomes red, flaky, and itchy. Its cause is not yet fully known but yeast called Malassezia that is commonly found on the skin has been found to play a role.

In fact, Malassezia normally lives on our skin, it’s always there and it’s numbers are constantly monitored by our immune system. Only when a full blown fungal growth can the symptoms be noticeable. This occurs when our immune system goes down due to poor nutrition, taking immunosuppressant medications, etc. Sudden Malassezia outburst also occur when favorable conditions promote optimum growth like too much exposure to moisture because these fungus love moist, sweaty environments.

In seborrheic dermatitis, the oil-producing glands called sebaceous glands undergo flare-ups, abnormally increasing the amount of oil produced. This then appear as thick, oily and yellow scales that are very sore and itchy. Increased amount of sebum on the scalp favors the growth of Malassezia, further causing itchiness and irritation. further causing itchiness and irritation.

The frequent side effect of seborrheic dermatitis of the scalp is temporary hair loss. Vigorous scratching can cause minute injuries to the scalp and hair follicles, , then permanent hair loss can be the end result.

Treatment involves proper scalp hygiene, the use of antifungal shampoos or creams, shampoos with sulfur, zinc, salicylic acid, phototherapy, or the use of steroids. Oftentimes, a combination of these treatments is employed. Seborrheic dermatitis is usually difficult to treat and is prone to recurrence and flare-ups.

A newer approach to managing seborrheic dermatitis is by using a non-irritating and organic shampoo like Nisim Deep Cleansing Shampoo. Unlike conventional seborrhea treatments, Nisim is a herbal-based hair loss treatment designed to gently cleanse the scalp to control sebum buildup. It also promotes healthy hair growth and effectively controls hair loss.
