DOES IRON DEFICIENCY CAUSE HAIR LOSS?

Posted by Manny Y on 6th Apr 2015

In women, probably the most common causes of sudden hair loss is telogen effluvium. This type of hair loss can be triggered by a variety of reasons, so it’s important to know the cause before choosing a hair loss treatment. Telogen effluvium is characterised by massive hair loss that occurs within a short time. Near half of all women experience hair loss after childbirth, mainly because of iron deficiency.

Women can suffer iron deficiency as a result of inadequate intake of iron in the diet as seen in strict vegetarians, those on crash diets, due to heavy menstruation, blood loss, ulcers, or chronic use of aspirin or NSAIDS (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications).

To carry oxygen to different cells in the body, the red blood cells need iron. Less iron means inadequate cell oxygenation. Because the hair cells are constantly growing and proliferating, iron deficiency can disrupt the normal hair growth cycle and the end result is excessive hair loss.

Once the iron levels return to normal, hair loss is reversible. If you think your losing hair due to iron deficiency, consult a physician for proper diagnosis. Self-medicating with large doses of iron supplements can be dangerous and aside from this, iron overload, just like iron deficiency, can also lead to hair loss.

To properly increase iron blood levels, right doses of iron supplements should be taken daily to slowly increase blood levels of iron. As said earlier, taking large doses iron can cause iron toxicity, this can literally burn a hole in your intestines and cause blood loss. In fact, Iron toxicity is probably one of the leading causes of death in children under six years old.

If you are experiencing hair loss, Nisim International has developed an herbal shampoo that is rich in amino acids and B complex vitamins that will control excessive hair loss within a week. Once your iron levels are restored to normal and your hair loss put under control, you can use FAST or Fortified Amino Scalp Therapy to make your hair grow faster in lesser time.
