DIFFERENT KINDS OF HAIR LOSS TREATMENTS

Posted by Manny Y on 7th Apr 2015

Nowadays, there are a lot of hair loss treatment products available in market and you can go crazy on selecting one. Different brand names, different applications, and different doses – you name it. Choosing the appropriate product can be really difficult. A good way to select a product is to go visit your physician, he or she can prescribe a hair loss treatment based on your present condition. But if you wish to self medicate then this will certainly be your problem.

Basically, there are three types of hair loss treatments, all of which have their own advantages and disadvantages. Some may find one treatment effective while the others will not find it so effective. In the end, it is really up to you on which hair loss product works best to stimulate your hair to grow.

First, there are oral types of treatments. These medications are taken usually in tablet or capsule form. When the drug is absorbed in the gut, this treats hair loss systemically. This means that oral treatments stop a hormone called DHT or dihydrotestosterone from within the body. DHT by the way is main cause of hair loss. It is a hormone naturally made in the body and every hair loss treatment is focused on trying to stop it from harming the hair follicles.

Second are topical types of treatments. These are simply applied to the scalp and also have the same anti DHT properties as oral treatments. Obviously, the difference is that topical treatments stop DHT at the scalp area only and will never interfere with DHT systemically.

Third and probably the best but expensive solution is a hair transplant. This procedure is done by harvesting your own hair follicles. These are usually taken at the back of your head where hair follicles remain healthy and these are transplanted directly on the bald areas of the scalp. The results are instantaneous and hair grows back thick in these areas within a few months. But of course, there are risks involved and some hair follicles do not survive the transplant or worse, your scalp can get infected. Overall, this is a good procedure with fast results.

If it weren’t for the cost, a hair transplant is probably the best hair loss treatment. But then again, topical and oral treatments works great too, it just takes time to see any results. The trend today is hair loss prevention and this involves using these non invasive treatments.
