DECREASED LEVELS OF THYROID HORMONES CAN LEAD TO HAIR LOSS

Posted by Manny Y on 7th Apr 2015

Amongst the unusual causes of hair loss is hypoparathyroidism. A medicated hair loss treatment is unnecessary if the hormonal problem is managed properly. Find out more about hypoparathyroidism and hair loss treatment alternatives.

The parathyroid glands are located behind the thyroid, they are 4 pea-sized glands. These glands secrete parathyroid hormone or PTH. If the calcium level in the body is too low, the parathyroids release more PTH. The hormone causes the bones to release more calcium to regulate its levels in the bloodstream. On the other hand, if there is too much calcium, the reverse process occurs.

When there is decreased production of PTH by the parathyroid glands, hypothyroidism occurs. Symptoms associated with hypoparathyroidism are weakness, muscle cramps, headache, and extreme nervousness. Hyper excitability of the nerves can result to uncontrollable spasms and twitching of the hands, feet, or the face.

The physician can analyze the condition after taking a thorough medical history. The presenting symptoms such as tingling of the extremities, muscle cramps, or facial muscle twitching can lead to the diagnosis. Blood tests will show low blood calcium levels, high blood phosphorus levels, and low parathyroid hormone level. Additional tests include urine tests that show high excretion of calcium, x-rays to reveal bone condition, and ECG or electrocardiogram to detect heartbeat irregularities.

Treating hypoparathyroidism is aimed to normalise the levels of calcium and phosphorus in the body. Medications can include oral calcium carbonate tablets and Vitamin D to help absorb calcium. Diet modification such as increasing intake of dairy products, green leafy vegetables, and calcium-enriched food can help improve the condition. Furthermore, it helps to avoid foods rich in phosphorus such as eggs, meat, and carbonated drinks.

Hypoparathyroidism can cause brittle nails, dry, coarse skin and patchy hair loss. These skin, nail, and hair conditions can be return to normal when the parathyroid condition is managed and monitored properly.

Since hypoparathyroidism is a chronic problem, lifelong treatments are generally prescribed. Regular checkup, blood tests, and proper diet can keep the symptoms under control. Hair loss can be improved by using a natural hair loss treatment, mild enough to be used for long periods.
