COMMON CAUSES OF HAIR LOSS AND THEIR TREATMENTS

Posted by Manny Y on 8th Apr 2015

Hair loss has always been a problem for men, women and more recently, young teenagers. What use to be a problem for the middle aged is now affecting young adults and teenagers. This is mainly due to hormonal changes, poor diet, hereditary and even stress. No matter what the age, hair loss can be embarrassing and a humiliating problem

Fortunately, these days, there are a lot of hair loss treatment products: there are creams, solutions or shampoos that are topically applied to scalp, there are medications taken internally to stop a specific hormone to promote hair growth and of course a hair transplant.

Common Hair Loss Causes

Stress – we all experience some level of stress in our lives, but too much stress can trigger a condition called telogen effluvium, which causes sudden increased hair fall. Shifting to a healthy lifestyle like eating healthy and doing regular exercises is a good way to fight stress induced hair loss.

Smoking – smoking can really cause hair loss because it reduces the absorption of oxygen in the lungs. Less oxygen means less hair being produced because hair producing cells need as much oxygen they can get because these cells are considered on of the fastest growing cells in the body.

Diet – It is good to be on a diet, but if you’re on a low protein diet plan, it’s best to shift to a different diet regime since our follicles needs a regular supply of protein to produce hair. In fact, our hair is mostly made of protein called keratin, the same substance found in our nails and skin. So if you take your daily requirements of protein, most likely you’ll have beautiful hair, nails and skin.

Hereditary – this is the most common cause of hair loss. Known as male/female pattern hair loss, this is due to a hereditary sensitivity of the hair follicles to DHT or dihydrotestosterone. DHT is actually a very potent hormone that comes from testosterone when acted upon an enzyme called 5 alpha reductase.

Treatments

Depending on the hair loss condition, various treatments are available. But generally, keeping yourself healthy and eat a healthy nutritious diet, you’re good to go. Genetic hair loss on the other hand is a different story and a hair loss treatment is needed to stop further hair fall and stimulate hair new hair growth.
