COMMON CAUSE OF HAIR LOSS

Posted by Manny Y on 7th Apr 2015

Hair loss is a very common problem for all of us. Normally, we go through hair fall throughout the end of every hair growth cycle and it is typical to find 80 to 100 hair strands to fall out per day. If by any chance or condition that might lead to hair fall more than 100 strands, then this is considered hair loss.

There are plenty of factors behind hair loss, there could be temporary hair loss like stress induced hair loss or hair loss because of extreme dieting. In addition there arelong term types of hair loss like androgenetic alopecia or alopecia totalis/universalis.

But themost commonly encountered type of hair loss is the permanent type androgenetic alopecia. Also calledmale/female pattern hair loss, this accounts about 60% of hair loss cases among males at about the age of 30.In males, the pattern of hair loss starts witha receding hair line that slowly progress upwards to the crown. Most men end up with a rim hair along the sides of the temple and back. In worst cases, total hair loss can occur. In women, the typical pattern of hair loss is generalized hair thinning. There are noreceding hair lines or bald spots, only hair thinning. It is rare to find women being completely bald. Androgenetic alopecia is a genetic condition and is transferred by both parents to their children. In studies, it was found that the scalp hair follicles of patients with androgenetic alopecia are vulnerable to a male hormone called dihydrotestosterone or DHT. This hormone is produced when testosterone interacts with 5 alpha reductase, an enzyme, and DHT if formed. DHT is a potent androgen and serves as an important hormone for the normal homeostasis of the body.

The only way to stop this form of hair loss is to use a hair loss treatment that nullifies the damaging effects of DHT to the scalp hair follicles. The good news is, there are a lot of treatments to select from. There are oral medications, solutions that are applied directly on the scalp and natural herbal treatments.
