When we come of age hair loss is expected especially to individuals with a family history of hair loss. But when hair loss occurs at a young age , this can strongly suggest an underlying medical condition.
A child suffering from hair loss is rare but it does occur and also runs in the family. But if you don’t have any family history of hair loss that manifest at a young age then it maybe due to a medical problem.
Anemia is seen in youngsters mostly because of insufficient intake of important vitamins and minerals and one of its major symptoms is hair loss. Anemia triggers a type of hair loss called telogen effluvium. Telogen effluvium is condition where all hair is forced to the telogen (resting) stage of the normal hair growth cycle. The telogen stage is the stage where hair is shed off. Normally, this stage consist only 10% of the hair growth cycle compared to the anagen (growth) stage which is 90%. For some reason all hair are reverted to telogen stage causing massive hair loss.
Anemia in children is usually caused by iron deficiency anemia or pernicious anemia. The former is due to decreased iron reserves in the body. The latter is due to lack of vitamin B12 or folic acid though this kind of anemia is more common among adults because of absorption problems. In children, pernicious anemia is simply to decrease intake of folic acid.
